Tracking Templates: How APAS® Cloud Tags Every Ad Click

Many teams don't make the most of their leads because they don't know where they came from.

Many teams don't make the most of their leads because they don't know where they came from. The click doesn't carry the campaign, the ad group, the ad or the keyword that brought the visitor in, so by the time a lead reaches your CRM, that story is already gone. Even if you can see how many leads you got from a campaign, you can't be sure about what produced them, and budget decisions end up resting on guesswork.

In this blog, we will show how APAS® Cloud’s tracking templates help you avoid that.

Ad Clicks Arrive Without Context

When someone clicks your ad, the ad platform knows exactly which campaign, ad group, ad and keyword brought them, but your website and your reports don't reflect that. Left on their own, clicks don't bring those details along, so if and when that visitor later converts, nobody can say for sure which ad was responsible for that initiative.

So how can you find the clarity you need?

The Power of a Tracking Template

A tracking template is a short piece of text that your ad platform adds to every click on your ads. It is made of parameters, which are labeled pieces of information attached to a link, such as the campaign or the ad.

APAS® Cloud can create that template for you, built with APAS® parameters, and your ad platform fills it in on every click with the campaign, the ad group, the ad and, on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, the keyword.

Auto tagging is kept on as well, so every click also carries its click ID, which is the small code that tells an ad platform which ad someone clicked specifically. Together, these are the details that APAS® Cloud's full funnel reports are built on.

The template also keeps your naming consistent. Sources, mediums and campaign names, the UTM parameters that tell your reports where a visit came from, are defined once and applied the same way everywhere, so your reports never split one campaign into three spellings.

Why the Edge URL Needs the Template’s Data

Your Edge URL is the link your ads point to, on a subdomain of your own domain. Every click is intercepted at the network edge, which means before any website loads, and it is given its APAS® Click ID, scored for bots and recorded.

What the Edge URL intercepts is the data that comes from the tracking template. The template labels the click, and the Edge URL captures it, so the two work together.

Without the template, the Edge URL won't intercept everything it needs, which is why the template is a critical part of the tracking system.

Set Once, Checked Every Hour

On Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, you turn on a template’s sync and APAS® Cloud does the rest. It first shows you exactly what will change, then sets the template for you. You can set it on your whole account, so every campaign uses it automatically, or on a single campaign if you want to give that campaign a name of your own.

Naming a campaign is optional. If you leave the name blank, the platform fills it in for you. Microsoft Ads uses the campaign name, while Google Ads only offers the campaign ID, which is a number. If you add a name of your own, your reports show that name instead, which will be easier to read.

After that, APAS® Cloud checks every hour that the template is still in place. If it was removed or replaced, APAS® Cloud puts it back and tells your admins by email and in the app. If something keeps changing it, the sync pauses and lets you know so you can act accordingly.

Nothing quietly overrides it either. A different template set on a campaign, or on an ad group in Google Ads, can override yours, which means yours stops being used. So APAS® Cloud clears those templates unless you choose to keep them, and it clears any new one at the next hourly check. Templates that APAS® Cloud made are left alone.

Setting It Up on Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and Reddit

These platforms don't sync, so you paste ready made URL parameters into your ads instead. They carry each platform's own values for the campaign and the ad, so every click from an ad that points at your Edge URLs arrives tagged.

On Meta, TikTok and Reddit, the parameters are added at the ad level, and the platform adds its own click ID to the landing page URL. On LinkedIn, they are added on your ad account or on a campaign, and LinkedIn adds its click ID when Enhanced conversion tracking is on.

Build Templates with APAS® Cloud

Every paid click carries a story about where it came from, but only if something is there to tag it. APAS® Cloud creates the template, syncs it and checks it every hour, and it works together with your Edge URL, so every click arrives labeled and your reports can tie each lead back to the campaign behind it.

If you want to see how this works on your own ad accounts, you can set up your first template with APAS® Cloud today.
